Session 3: Baggio, Clark and Dervin

New Driving Question:
My driving question was, “Does guided reading affect reading comprehension and reading fluency?” Yet, now I think it might be modified to include accuracy instead of fluency (I’m not sure if that is possible??). As I think of the resources that I might include in my Capstone project, I feel like I need to be more specific when I say “guided reading”. I think I might focus more on the strategies that are utilized during guided reading. A possibility for a modified driving question might be, “What guided reading strategies affect Reading Comprehension and Reading accuracy?”.

Key Ideas:
Baggio:
- The main concept/idea I took away from the Baggio reading was the Trilogy of the Mind which includes the affective, the cognitive and the conative domains. I agree with Baggio that the affective is an extremely important domain in learning for both, children and adults. I believe that our feelings can and do affect all aspects of a person’s life, including their experience with learning new content.
- Some learning that was reinforced for me through these chapters was that simple visuals are typically the most effective and that 85% of learners are visual learners, as Baggio mentions. I am definitely included in that 85%! The mini test at the end of the chapter reinforced what I already knew about myself. This made me think that just as I need visuals to understand content better, other types of learners have different needs and as educators it is imperative that we always remember this when planning our lessons.
- Another take away was that an effective design for learning considered the material being presented, the technologies being used and the way in which individuals learn in order to have the best possible leaning outcome.
- The Clark readings focus on an Instructional System Design which consists of seven stages. These stages reminded me of the cycle of inquiry that we follow when we deliver any given lesson in our classrooms. We analyze our students’ needs and design a lesson with those things in mind. Then you assess, revise the lesson and re-teach if needed.
- While reading through the “How to Brush Your Teeth” lesson, I realized that parts of the lesson could be linked to the Baggio reading. For example, the Introduction and the Importance section, call on a learners’ background knowledge and their affective domain when they mention “social acceptability”. Once again this highlights for me the importance of knowing our students and tailoring our teaching to their learning.
- The main idea I took away from Dervin’s readings is the bridging of the gap. As educators we must invest time to truly get to know our students in order to be able to better assist them with appropriate strategies and skills that they can utilize to bridge the gaps.

Some of the information that I need to know would be:
- Guided reading strategies that affect reading comprehension in a positive manner.
- Guided reading strategies that affect reading accuracy in a positive manner.
- What does my End User Profile look like?
- What should my Capstone project look like in order to know what else I need to know?
