After reviewing the IRB, I realize I was unaware of the multitude of laws and regulations in relation to research; yet, I am glad to know that there is so much in place to ensure the safety of human research subjects. As I review the IRB I also know that I must clarify my driving question because I must provide a summary of my proposed research. As I mentioned before, I would like to explore how I can improve reading comprehension through small group instruction for ELLs who are below grade level in reading, and possibly include the use of GLAD strategies. I will need to collect and compare student reading scores as well as other assessment data from the beginning of the school year and the end of each trimester, through the end of the school year. By comparing the data, I will be able to measure the growth at each assessment period. Even though I have a million questions as to how my action research will come together, I know the IRB will be helpful in organizing all of information.

I felt the same way! I had no idea there were laws and regulations, but it is important to protect any human participants. I truly felt overwhelmed with everything. I'm sure you know this, but if you search Pinterest for GLAD strategies you can find a lot! Your blog just reminded me that I should also use other data in my research. I was planning on just using their comprehension test scores but now I realize I should also use STAR, DRAs, etc. Thank you for your post!

I agree with you. I had no idea how much went into conducting research when working with kids. I will also need to figure out what my driving question will be. I too am overwhelmed with questions of what I want research and with all the types of regulations that we have to consider.

Yes there is so much that goes into research. It can be overwhelming to think about especially when you aren't 100% sure of what your DQ. I am really struggling with finalizing my DQ. I sure hope that we get more clarity in the up coming classes.

I totally agree about there being so many laws regarding the IRB, and actually being glad that there are so many systems in place to keep human subject, and especially students, safe during research projects like ours. I am in the same boat also about finding clarity with the DQ, but hopefully this upcoming class will help to straighten some ideas out!
